After working in finance for 10 years, I realized I was not fulfilled but I had no idea how to find work that I loved. Once I decided I was going to quit my job, I began researching business ideas and was thinking of starting a consumer products company. I was all head, mind, ego and wallet. I wasn’t even passionate about the idea I was pursuing. I realized this and decided to pull back from the business I was thinking of launching.
That left me with nothing, nowhere. I was lost and confused. I was committed to finding work I was passionate about but I had no idea how to do that.
After doing a lot of soul searching, I decided to quit my job with NOTHING PLANNED. It was the scariest thing I have ever done. I’m a text book perfectionist, over-achiever. I’ve never NOT had a plan. And I’m not someone who would intentionally decide to be unemployed. And yet I did. Why? TRUST. I realized that I needed to get out of the finance environment entirely before I could be honest with myself about what it was I truly wanted.
This was a very scary step for me but I was so desperate to find work I loved that I was determined to do it. I decided I would give myself six months to follow my heart and my intuition and if I didn’t find work I loved after six months, I could always go back to starting a consumer products company or applying for more traditional jobs. At the time, I felt like I was jumping off a cliff. And yet, in hindsight, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Within 3 months I had my message and knew exactly what kind of work I wanted to pursue that would make me feel energized and excited. I got what I wanted in less time than I would have ever dreamed. And yet I had no certainty that it would unfold that way when I took that leap of faith. I had to Trust in the process. And stay Committed to my goal of finding work I love.
Now it’s up to you. Do you trust yourself?
Even if you don’t have all the answers today, can you trust that the process will unfold for you if you commit to finding what you deeply desire?
